Resize Image for Instagram

Get your photo to exactly 1080×1080, 1080×1350, or 1080×1920 before you post. Free, private, in your browser.

Need batch processing or bigger files? Download Compresso for folders, big videos, and offline compression.

Instagram shows feed photos at 1080 pixels wide, full stop. A square post is 1080×1080, a portrait post 1080×1350, a Story or Reel cover 1080×1920. Anything bigger or a different shape gets scaled and re-compressed by Instagram before anyone sees it, and that second pass is where sharp photos turn soft.

Sizing the photo yourself first keeps that pass from hurting. Pick the format you are posting, and the photo is resized to exactly those dimensions on your device: crop to fill the frame the way Instagram does, or fit the whole photo with a plain background. The file comes out at a few hundred KB instead of the 5 to 12MB your phone saved, so it uploads fast and stays clean.

Nothing is uploaded to a server. The resize runs in your browser tab, so unpublished photos stay private until you post them. Resizing a whole shoot? The Compresso desktop app processes folders of photos offline on Mac and Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should Instagram photos be?+

Square feed posts display at 1080×1080, portrait feed posts at 1080×1350 (4:5), and Stories and Reels at 1080×1920 (9:16). Uploading at exactly these sizes means Instagram does not need to rescale your photo.

What is the difference between crop to fill and fit whole photo?+

Crop to fill covers the whole frame with your photo and trims the overflow at the edges, which is what Instagram itself does. Fit whole photo keeps everything visible and fills the leftover space with a plain background.

Will resizing to Instagram dimensions hurt quality?+

No. Downscaling a phone photo to 1080 pixels wide removes detail Instagram would throw away anyway, and the file is saved at high quality. Uploading an exact-size photo also skips Instagram's own resize pass, which is where most visible quality loss happens.

Should I use portrait or square for feed posts?+

Portrait (1080×1350) takes up the most screen space in the feed, so it tends to hold attention longer. Square (1080×1080) is the safer pick for product shots and anything that must not be cropped.
